Big Cogboy Energy, part 2 - Imperial Painting Corps attend.

Sergeant Vilas stood in his bouncing turret basket as the column of tanks roared along the road ahead.
Dirt and dust from the hardpan were kicked up and he could hear it pinging off the side and under armour above the engine noise.

Riding head and shoulders out of the cupola meant there was a risk of enemy sniper action, but it provided him with better vision against incoming enemy infantry who may attack the column. The wooded and overgrown farmlands either side of the highway were perfect ambush territory to a rushing unit of armour, even if the scouts had said the land was secure. Better to not take chances was Vilas experience.

"Once again, so our orders are clear" Captain Marek's voice was tinny through the vox earpieces, "we turn at waypoint marker 12.68, cut a path through the brush and engage any enemy armour, whilst providing support for our infantry".

A chorus of affirmatives rang from the commanders of the armour group.

"Remember" Marek continued, " We're coming in behind the infantry, so watch your positioning and firing lines. I don't want any black cross incidents, otherwise I'll kick your arse, even if you are dead. Is that clear?"

Another round of affirmatives along with some chuckles sounded in Vilas' ears.
Black Cross, Vilas thought darkly not chuckling, the name given to an incident of Imperial units firing upon one another. Emperor's sake, let's hope we don't have the Commissar's attention because of one of those, he remembered the consequences of the fighting back at Avernus.
Those dark days of city fighting had touched off more then one black cross, and more then one execution because of it.

He pushed the dark thoughts from his mind and scanned the flanks again.

*****

Another tense few minutes passed and they slowed down at the waypoint. They could clearly hear a vicious firefight occuring nearby which could only mean that they were arriving into a definite hot zone.
A pall of dark smoke and a large explosion told them that the enemy armour had committed, they turned as ordered and cut through the brush.

As they crested the ridgeline the valley bowl was revealed to them. What had once been a local orchard was now a cratered mess, smoking from explosions, torn up land and destroyed trees looking like the entrails of the earth had been exposed.

The Cadian 37th were dug in in a long line, anchored at one end by the ruined remains of a walled farmhouse. They were fighting hard to hold off a wave of traitor guard. The infantry of both sides had hunkered down and furious lasfire streaked across the bowl in brightly coloured lines.
Enemy armour had been brought up, and impressively two vehicles were smoking wrecks. Though several more were still throwing high explosive shells at the Imperial soldiers.

Taking all this in with a glance, and with an ear listening to Marek's commands to the armour group. Vilas ordered his crew to target a scruffy half track which was shelling a heavy weapons squad. He checked the firing solution his gunner called out, even as he flipped the switch and began broadcasting his identifier signal from his

"Fire" he ordered, voice ringing in the buttoned up metallic turret, and the tank shook with the force of the main gun. The breach flung backwards and his loader expertly swayed out of the way as the empty shell casing was ejected and flung into the used hopper.
The smoke which filled the turret was sucked out through the louvres behind him and Vilas kept his eye trained on the scope.

The shell landed true and struck the half track mid way along its length. The vehicle shunted several feet to its side before flipping over, track sections flying off. Greasy black smoke erupted from thebwoubded machine before it blew up, sending armour shrapnel flying in all directions.

"Good kill, let's find another" Vilas congratulated his crew and swung his scope's to find another target.

Where does time go?
It doesn't seem like I modified this Leman Russ all the way back in July 2020...but it was all that time ago.

This tank modified for a friend from a battered old example of the Leman Russ Battle Tank had sat gathering dust for a couple of years and I finally worked on it last year alongside his Valdor Tank Hunter.

I found the pre-weathered photographs when going through some archive folders and deleting stuff. I figured I'd make a post about it, the actual painting side is quite simple;
Abaddon Black basecoat.
Ulthuan Grey and Khorne Red markings.
Leadbelcher Metal Details.
With a few Mournfang Brown leather details for the crew stowage.
I believe that at the time of these photos that I'd taken the step to wash the track units with Carroburg Crimson and Earthshade already.

I imagined the bare metal part under the chassis is a battlefield repair, maybe from some lucky half detonated explosive or from colliding with something on the field.
Remember the bottoms of tanks were generally unarmoured when compared with the rest of the vehicle.

The tank does look somewhat toy like in this state, very flat and not at all realistic.

That's where the weathering coat comes in and kicked the realism up a notch.
Compared to my own Generic Armoured Tank this one is very simple to do in that I just took the drybrushing stage and went ham at it.

I used Stormvermin Fur and drybrushed downwards only in a vertical motion to simulate the dirt and dust being washed down the vehicle by the rain.
I see this effect all the time on the rail vehicles at work, as well as general road dirt from travelling, so added some Baneblade Brown and very light Ushabti Bone in circular drybrushing around the motion at the bottom of the track units.

Finally, here is the finished Leman Russ alongside the Valdor Tank Hunter.

I have a couple of other tanks to work on for this small squadron and then give back to my friend:

Decisions, decisions about where to begin, any thoughts on that then leave a comment!

Until next time, have nice day...

Old Stuff Day 2023.

Another "Old Stuff Day", and I've had a flick through the archives of some blogs I follow to shed some light on some interesting posts, lost to the mists of time and buried under newer, active posts.

Firstly:
Who doesn't love a funny looking fat goblin warlord, who had an awesome storyline to boot (seriously look him up).
I do like the alternative 'Avatars of War' mini here, as he looks badass.

Secondly:
Not one post per se, but the entire Warmachine section of the Weemen Blog.
Warmachine is one of those games which was huge and then the company made some questionable decisions and killed it off entirely in some areas.
I still love the steampunk asthetic of the game and pick gear up on the cheap as people still sell off their collections.

Thirdly:
XarfaiEngle who runs A Butterfly's Hobby Tally blog has been a regular commenter on my blog since Dreadtober last year, when we began commenting a bit back and forth.
His Chaplain Dreadnaught is a brilliantly painted mini, and one which I do wish I could get hold of my own, but it will probably never happen.
His Luna Wolf, also featured, is a nice clean paintjob, just a little too early in the crusade for me as I prefer Sons of Horus green.

Fourthly:
The Tabletop Apocalypse blog has been a great inspiration for conversion material, I've got a 1:48 scale Hind D kit in my wishlist on Amazon because of this blog.
But the Space Skaven, based off of Ad-Mech are one of the most original ideas I had seen, this is the showcase post at the end of the project.

Fifthly:
Getting to my actual friends blogs now, not just internet acquaintances.
A Cardboard Fortress may have dropped off the grid for a little while because of his work and family life, but we stay in touch and need to arrange another game with my Orks Vs his Imperial Guard.
This post is a very old Hail Caesar battle, which if he still has a couple of armies I would be willing to play the system with him at some point.

Sixthly:
Chris is slowly getting back into blogging his hobby, but this little throwback is a toy van which he made up into terrain for a post apocalypse/Fallout game he was playing at the time.
I have a dim memory of him making a children's playground piece of terrain and filling it with landmines as well...sick puppy.

Seventhly:
My own offering into this trip to the past, is this Apocalypse battle from just before the pandemic hit.
I traveled over to my friend in Stockport and we commandeered a couple of tables at Element Games for the evening.
I still love the 2019 Apocalypse rules and would happily play them over 9th or even 8th edition 40k at the moment, alas no-one else thinks that way sadly.

I hope you've enjoyed this post for 'Old Stuff Day 2023'. If you have any other old posts on blog I don't follow but you do and think I may enjoy, leave a link in the comments.

Until next time, have nice day...

Monster March 7 - part 1; The Introduction.

The earth is breaking. Tectonic upheaval forces superheated gas through fissures to the surface around the base of the mountain.

Trees and dry grass flash burn as magma begins to spit through cracks and forms pools as chunks of earth melt away leaving only the hardest stones left. Burnt trees fall, crumbling into chunks of charcoal as they land and ash blows away on the dry gusts of wind.

With a grinding, tearing sound large chunks of rock tear free and float upwards, becoming suspended and pouring lava back to the ground as a huge lightning filled smoke cloud, black as pitch rises from the mountain in the distance.

Then with an earthshaking explosion, the volcano erupts. After the sound there is a dry roar as the shockwave passes and strips any tree from the ground for miles around.
Lava flows in thick rivers down the flanks of the mountain, dragging granite boulders with it.

Everything melts or burns, the sounds of explosions and crashes accompany what must be the end of the world.
The magically suspended islands still leak lava which adds to the hellish landscape as the Plane of Fire bleeds over heralding the arrival of something monstrous...

*****

With March upon us, it's time for one of the community events I mentioned I was going to take part in, this time 'Monster March #7'.

Organised by Swordmaster of Path of an Outcast, the event follows much the same procedure as Dreadtober.
  1. Introduction.
  2. Build.
  3. Paint - part 1.
  4. Paint - part 2.
  5. Final reveals.
So with that said, I plan on painting this beastie, which I've had in the cupboard for a few years now:

And my own version:

I'd started on the base and gotten most of the glittering horde done when work stopped last time. You can see the unpainted wall and bits of rubble in amongst the treasure which I have to work on:

The beast itself is really well detailed and captures that Dungeons and Dragons artwork well. The wings were a pain in the arse to put together as we had to pin them, greenstuff the joints and use a hairdryer to soften the resin, then quickly dunk it in cold water once we'd got the shape correct:

Lastly, just to remind you how big this Dragon is, here it is next to a 3d printed adventurer miniature:

Next, as with my previous 3D print challenge, I went on the internet and found some suitable inspiration images*:

Artwork by Jesper Ejsing.

Artwork by Timi Honkanen.

Artwork by Siswanto.

Artwork by Sandra.

Artwork by Bryan Syme.

The classic Pathfinder cover art by Wayne Reynolds.

Personally I am partial to the Wayne Reynolds artwork and the Bryan Syme piece which has the purple membranes in the wings. I have seen a few which have markings running up the wings, but I'll work on that when I get to that point.

First things first is to throw some base colours at the Dragon itself and to finish off the rubble on the base.

Until next time, have nice day...

*This time fortunately, I didn't come across pages and pages of "Waifu" material, which was surprising as this IS the internet we are talking about.

Hobby Spending - February 2023.

This month has been quite quiet on the hobby front, mainly due to work as not only have I interviewed and got a promotion from Shunter to Driver guaranteed within the next year, I've also been off busy learning how to operate other freight yards to increase my route knowledge and availability to cover shifts.

I've still picked up a couple of bits though, mainly for my own Horus Heresy project, more of that to come.

First thing I picked up was Antor Delassio:

He is a Blood Angel and one of the characters from Kill Team Cassius of Deathwatch: Overkill fame (if you remember that splash released boardgame).
My own White Scars Captain on Bike is another member of the Killteam.

My second purchase for the month was a Metal Apothecary:

An old metal Space Marine Apothecary. These models have a ton of character and being firstborn, fit perfectly with my HH plans.
I'm thinking of turning this guy into an Imperial Fist.

Like in the previous month's post, here are the totals for the month:
Deathwatch Antor Delassio, Blood Angel - £4.99.
Classic Metal Space Marine Apothecary - £2.20

Total for February: £7.19
Budget for February: £50.
Over/Under Yearly Budget: under budget by £44.01.

Where is the time going this year, it's already the end of February.

Until next time, have nice day...

Repanse de Lyonesse, Damoiselle de Guerre - part 4.

It is the Bretonnian year 1,017 (Imperial Calendar year 2,007). The lands of Bretonnia are ravaged by foul Chaos invaders and with King Louis the Brave dead, the Knights of Bretonnia, whilst valiantly defending the peasant populace under their protection are being thrown back at every turn.

*****
Four months had passed since the vision of the Lady, and Rapanse had risen from a simple peasant shepherdess to an accomplished warrior leading scores of knights against their foes.
From her first stumbling fight against the Beastmen she now fought as a woman possessed of all the skill and power of a Grail Knight with years of experience.

Chaos warbands had been ridden down and routed to the sea by her forces all throughout the northern coasts of Lyonesse, L'Anguille and now Couronne as they rode towards the capital which was under siege.

Knights had formed up and ridden to her side, daily pledging fealty to her leadership for the duration of the crisis, many recognised instinctively that she had been blessed by the Lady and held her in awe.

Riding along the main thoroughfare, the capital came into sight and the Chaos hordes besieging it were almost without number. Barbarian tribes, clad in thick furs howled and fought against neighbouring Beastmen warbands at the rear of the force. More disciplined and monstrous forces were closer to the city and trying to force a breach.

A brace of stone throwers hurled masonry torn from the town outside at the city walls which cracked asunder. A bronze gilted battering ram was slammed repeatedly into the thick oak gates which had been sealed closed for weeks now.

Rapanse wheeled her horse to look upon her army, the knights forming themselves into one huge wedge formation. She wheeled again and took off at a gallop towards the enemy forces, the loyal knights following, shaking the ground with the force of so many heavily armoured riders bearing down.

Too late the tribes turned from their squabbles, ridden down and crushed into the mud beneath the charging tide. Horses whinnied as they contacted the enemy, but the knights fought on. Lance's impaling those ahead until they splintered under the attack. Swords were drawn and the bloody work began.

Still they rode on, cutting down tribesmen, Norscan's, mutated Ogre's, larger mutated tribes, and they came upon the equally heavily armoured warriors at the core of the force.
These elite warriors fought back with superlative skill, tearing knights from their saddles as they rode past before beating them to a pulp with their brutal hammers and maces.

As they neared the center of the enemy line, stars exploded behind Rapanse's eyes. She shook her head and realised that she'd been struck with the flat of a spear. The perpetrators arm suddenly separated from his body in a welter of blood and screams, and though she was uninjured, the banner of the lady had fallen.

It had not reached the ground however as a knight riding past caught the falling tapestry and sacrificing his sword he held the banner aloft for all to see. The Blue and Red in stark contrast to his heraldry of pure white.

"Onwards lady, let us cut the head from this vile horde" his voice rang out metallic through his helmet and Rapanse nodded, urging her horse onwards again towards the lord behind this attack.

Reinvigorated, the knights turned and followed her into the fray again, their collective rage at the damage to their beloved country spurring them on. Rapanse, filled with the power of the lady was as a beacon to them, glowing with a golden nimbus of power from the Goddess.

As the Chaos lord swung at her, she turned her horse away from the incoming blow, over-extending her attacker. Mutated animal eyes looked up at her and squinted, reacting to the radiant golden light which played about Rapanse's head.

The moment of hesitation was all she needed and as if guided by the Lady of the Lake, the Sword of Lyonesse passed through the vile mutated warriors neck and separated head from shoulder. In an instant the chaos horde faltered as the power holding it together faded.

The survivors of the lesser tribes howled and fled, the more disciplined elements put up a fighting retreat or died to a man in place as the Bretonnians took them apart, piece by piece.

*****

The final post in my Rapanse de Lyonesse series is the showcase of the completed model.
I'll let the photo's do the talking as I've covered most of how I painted her in the previous posts:

She's been a good project to get finished and I've really enjoyed painting this old model.
I even managed to get some better paint on her face.

I hope you've enjoyed this series, as I have a few bigger projects to start working on now. I may return to Bretonnia one day with a 3D printer army as I've found some good STLs recently, but one thing at a time.

Until next time, have nice day...

*****
As the celebrations began, the great doors to the city opened and the Men-at-arms marched out to secure the entrance road.

Behind them, flanked by his last remaining Grail Knight guardians, the young king of Bretonnia, Louis the Young, bade Rapanse approach and kneel.

"We had heard of your approach and prayed to the Lady for salvation. That she provided is a blessing to all of Bretonnia" he said and the gathering crowd cheered.

"Rapanse, in recognition of your deeds to our fair land these past months and your defence of our people, I hereby knight you and raise you up to be a Duchess of Lyonesse. Arise Rapanse de Lyonesse, rise a knight and Damoiselle de Guerre of Bretonnia" the king cried and the crowed erupted into ecstatic cheering.

"My lady" the knight of white heraldry knelt as she stood, "I believe this is your banner, I kept it aloft for you so as not to sully the colours of the Lady ". Draped over his outstretched arms was the Banner of the Lady, still as fresh and new as when it had first been woven.

"What is your name?" Rapanse asked the humble warrior.

"Henri le Massif, my lady" he replied still not looking up.

"I name you Paladin of my army, the Chevalier's de Lyonesse, you will be my banner bearer and personal champion as I see you have drank from the Grail".

He nodded and rose to his feet, towering a least a foot above her and held the banner aloft in on upheld arm. The breeze caught it and the emblazoned Fleur-de-lis fluttered to the cheers of the Bretonnian populace.

The January 3D print challenge - 2023, part 3.

Hello, welcome to the third part of this small series dealing with the January 3D Print Challenge.

If you remember, I bought £10 Blind Boxes for myself, Chris and Cardboard Fortress which all came with a guaranteed 'Ziri' miniature so we could all paint her and compare/contrast our different painting styles.

This can be found in Part 1 and Part 2.

For part 3 though, I wanted to showcase the three miniatures I received and got finished throughout the month*.

So, with Ziri, as already discussed, I chose this piece of artwork as an inspiration piece after a fruitless search for JRPG artwork which wasn't Hentai, Porn or Waifu material.

Not rehashing everything said in parts 1 and 2, but I kept to the colour scheme with just the cloak being used to add some brighter colours.
Chris did comment to me over messenger that they almost seemed like Parrot feathers with the colours.
I'm most proud of her blonde hair though as it's the first time I think I've ever done a decent job on that colour hair. It's usually too bone or yellow coloured.

The second character I received was Vivi, a Black Mage from Final Fantasy**.
He is one of my favourite characters from across the franchise so I was really pleased when he was in the box.

Culled from the internet again, I found the Final Fantasy IX concept artwork for him.

Armed with this I made a start, the Thunderhawk Blue coat, and the green/white striped trousers were iconic, as was the hat with the leather wrapped around it.
A lot of contrast paints were used;
Skeleton Horde for the hat.
Apothecary White and Militarum Green for the trousers.
Wildwood for the leather and his staff.
For the leather this was then coated twice with Carroburg Crimson wash to give that deeper red look.

I deviated with his cuffs and the tails of his coat by using Ulthuan Grey line with red or black as this gave a much more satisfying contrast to the blue coat rather then the light grey used in the artwork.

The third miniature I received in my Blind Box was a Doberman, more specifically "Guard Dog 3".
A quick jaunt to Google again and I gathered this reference picture:

One of my friends said that I should paint him as Scooby Doo, but I chose not too, preferring to keep within the somewhat more realistic/sensible side of the JRPG theme I was trying to work within for the project.

Not much to comment as it was a fairly decent and simple paint job.
Abaddon Black basecoat with Mournfang Brown patches for the markings.
I then lightly drybrushed the entire mini with Stormvermin Fur to get some definition on the face and musculature, then toned that down with an all over Nuln Oil wash.
He was the quickest mini of the three to paint, and most people's favourite***.

Lastly here's a group photo of the trio, they didn't come with bases so they're on 32mm's.
I tore up some cork to make rocks and then used my usual builders sand.
As a different tack, I worked over a light grey undercoat and painted the bases twice with Snakebite Leather, the rocks with Stormvermin Fur washed with Earthshade.
Then I drybrushed the entire base with Ushabti Bone for a highlight.
Some grass tufts from the drawer and edge the bases with Abaddon Black and they were done.
The final step was to lightly spray them with Matt Varnish, this helps set the Tufts in place as well I've found.

This has been an enjoyable diversion of hobby time, and bringing Chris and Cardboard Fortress into it was a fun conversational time as well.

As I said in Part 2, I am going to run one of these with other people again in a few months, but rather then the £10 Blind Box, I'll buy an STL and print/cure a miniature for everyone taking part. As there are some awesome creators out there on the internet and some really lovely models which deserve to be physical models.

I've another couple of 3D printed projects in the pipeline which I've already received, having had them printed here by a friend.

Until next time, have nice day...

*I never specified that we had to paint all three mini's, I just decided to get them all done and ready for the display case.

**We Print Mini's do other characters from Final Fantasy, I may have a punt on some of those later in the year.
Cloud, Today, Aerith, Vincent from Final Fantasy VII are all available from the seller that I've found searching through their listings.

***Kind of like this:
