Hobby Spending - November 2022.

With the dark nights of November drawing the year almost to a close, it is time to look at the financial situation of the hobby for the month again.

Managing to visit Element Games, maybe for the last time this year, but I may squeak in another visit to Stockport before Christmas, I picked up a few things which I had been needing...and FORGOT a few things I needed...

With a growing collection of Warhammer Underworlds warbands, I figured I'd need someway to protect and organise the myriad cards which come with the game.
First up was a box of card protectors:, classic black because why not?

I have been playing around writing a reskinned version of the Age of the Wolf campaign which Studio Tomahawk released for the first edition of Saga.
My version will not be Dark Age Britain, but Sengoku era Japan, and upon discovering that Element sold a selection of the Bushido miniatures, I picked up a Samurai to test the scale against my Warlord Games/Test of Honour collection, as I intend to use these as the character models to lead the armies, and then make two generic forces of Ashigaru and Samurai/Sohei/On a Bugeisha, etc.

The last box of Daemonettes which Element had in. I needed these to finish off a Black Legion army which my son's picked for One Page Rules.

Lastly I tripped over a box of MDF terrain on my way to the till to pay for stuff and ended up picking up a TTCombat Small Minka from their Eastern Empires range. Obviously this is to go with the Samurai and I have another house and rice store, so maybe one of two more buildings and then some generic trees/hills/etc

So everything above was from Element Games, these next two items were picked up from Poundland and are listed in the shop as "Spice Racks". I'm going to stick them into the display cabinets in order to lift models at the rear so they're actually on display.

With that said, let's get onto the numbers for the month:

November spend totals:
Dragon Shield Card Protectors - £8.
Bushido Akio Takashi - £4.
Box of Daemonettes - £21.
TT Combat Small Minka - £10.
2x Organiser shelves - £8.

Total for November - £51
Budget for November - £50.
Over/Under Budget - Over by £1
Over/Under Yearly Budget - Under by 59.95.

So I've gone over budget by £1 this month, but I'm still nearly £60 under budget for the year, so well ahead of my total.

With December and Christmas looming, and it being the last month of the year, I think we'll be fine to come in under budget then.

Apart from GW releasing those Escher Jetbikes and the Ash Wastes Crawler thing...those are calling to the inner Mekboy to be kit bashed into something Orky, and I still want a close combat Leviathan Dreadnought, or two...dammit...

Until next time, have nice day...

Vampire Knights - a cross-blog challenge.

Prince Duvalle claims descent from the von Carstein lineage, and few are foolish enough to gainsay him to his face. The charismatic lord is adept at conjuring glamours and illusions, rendering his prey disoriented and vulnerable before the final blow. His personal coterie are known as the Crimson Court, a clique of vampires obsessed with the hunt – his right-hand man, Gorath the Enforcer, the savage and twisted Ennias Curse-born, and the proud duellist Vellas von Faine.

*****

The other day I suggested to Chris about painting up a small project to completion as a sort of end of month challenge type deal.
We both had recently built up the Vampire warband for Warhammer Underworlds, The Crimson Court, so this seemed the logical go-to as we could paint them together for a fixed deadline and compare the two units once done.

I really like the Warhammer Underworlds game in general, but the individual warbands are fantastic self contained projects, the models of which also double really well as commander or character models for a larger massed army battle.

For my part the models were built, I wished later that I'd some them in sub-assemblies.
I added some scattered pools of sand to the bases for some extra detail, rather then just the cracked flagstones.
I then undercoated them with Dark Grey and attempted to zenithal undercoat with some lighter grey and white, intending for these models to be a testbed for new techniques.

The undercoating worked... somewhat to plan...

At this point the models stayed for a couple of days whilst I went off and played Dragon Rampant for the day and dealt with household stuff before getting chance to hobby again.

During this time I looked into the story of the characters for inspiration for painting and apart from the above passage there really isn't anything to go on.

Into the Von Carstein lore I looked, starting with the surviving member of the old world family, Manfred Von Carstein, now one of the three Mortarch's of Nagash and riding the big Dread Abyssal, he's a cool miniature even if by his character traits he's a dick really.
He has so much potential which GW/BL squandered simply by making him one of the "I'll always betray you because I'm power hungry" archetypes, but one which doesn't actually use any intelligence to do so.

The original Von Carstein, Vlad was infinitely more likable as a genocidal, power hungry, sociopathic undead blood drinker because he was relatable to a character which we already know in Dracula.
Vlad Von Carstein being Warhammer's Dracula analogue.
His story with his wife Isabella added to that characterisation and even though they were trying to usurp the throne of The Empire, they had a great story because it wasn't just a one-trick thing of the same actions in every story.
They even made the Ring of Resurrection magic item which Vlad used to stay alive through various "certain death" scenarios and when it was stolen he met his final end, as did Isabella.
They both had fantastic miniatures which I wish I could get my hands on without paying a fortune for, just like Bretonnians, but oh well...

Back to the Crimson Court, with Prince Duvalle claiming lineage with this bloodline, and his armour being the same style, I originally thought about doing the armour a deep purple, but felt that was off the mark.

Mengle Miniatures put a great "Masterclass" type tutorial/blogpost up when the Crimson Court were released and I decided to follow that after reading it through.
But with the caveat of only Duvalle would be in full Crimson armour, and von Faine would have her chest plate Crimson and leg armour black to match the other lower standing members of the warband.

This I felt would tie them to the name of the warband and the bloodline from their backstory.

So the plan was to get these models fully finished by midnight on November 30th (tonight as of writing this), and put up a blogpost detailing them.
I started the painting on Sunday 27th and by the end of the day had ended up here:

All of the basecoats are down apart from the metallics, and the armour has started to be highlighted.
Another couple of nights work saw the major sections completed and finally at around 21.20 Tuesday 29th the warband was fully finished and read for photos:

I followed a lot of the steps in the Mengle Miniatures tutorial, highlighting the red up with Wild Rider Red and spot highlighting the corners with orange, something I've never pushed that far before for highlights.
I'll add different bits about each model as we go through a series of rather cruel close-ups:

Starting with Prince Duvalle:

As mentioned before I pushed his armour highlights up to the orange on the raised corners.
The base was also an experiment following the tutorial starting with Incubi Darkness (lovely colour) and shading with Nuln Oil. Then highlighting with Incubi Darkness and a further highlight with Thunderhawk Blue.
Given how cold and stony the base is, I didn't drybrush over the skull or Duvalle's feet with dust as I normally do on a battlefield base, this adds a little warmth and colour into the dark base.

Gorath the Enforcer:

Gorath the Enforcer is the "Unit" as I nicknamed him. A hulking slab of cold undead muscle, but which has all the speed and power that comes with vampirism, terrifying.
For his armour I went with the traditional Von Carstein black, highlighting with Mechanicus Standard Grey and spotting the corners with Ulthuan Grey.
Easier to see on this model is the skintone, which is a cool, dead flesh appearance, this is Grey Seer and glazed over with severely watered down Thunderhawk blue, before being highlighted up through Grey Seer and Ulthuan Grey again.
His cloak shows off the wet blending technique I attempted on the various cloaks the vampire wear. Barak-Nar Burgundy and Abaddon Black then with a clean wet brush I mixed them together, treating the miniature like a 3D palette.

Ennias Curse-Born:

The most monochrome miniature in the warband. In an effort to add some colour, I glazed the wings with watered down Druchii Violet to try and get some purple in there and he has a couple of red jewels to tie to Duvalle's armour.
His mace is Grey Knights Steel washed with Agrax Earthshade and layered back up to Steel again.

Vellas von Faine:

The duelist Vellas von Faine is probably my favourite miniature from the set, interestingly Curse-Born above is Chris' favourite but my least favourite from the group.
Von Faine got all of the techniques listed above, with her armour being split black and red she had both sets of highlights, her cloak has some wet blending on it, but it was hard to do because of all the hair...
Hair which was painted Grey Seer and given a heavy coat of Apothecary White. The coloured sections were rebased with Grey Seer and then got a coat of Blood Angels Red, contrast paints made the hair relatively easy overall.
Incidentally her face does look better in real life, as I said these were some cruel close-ups of the models.

I'm really pleased with how these.models have turned out for just a few hours work, maybe oe-two per night for about three nights.

As I have several of these warbands to do still, I may use one after each big project is finished as a palette cleanser type arrangement.

Until next time, have nice day...

Bloodbath on the Plains of Doom - A Dragon Rampant battle report.

The horde moved across the plains kicking up a stream of dust as it passed.
The Black Axe Tribe had assured Lord Kharver that there was a henge of standing stones nearby which would give power to whoever sacrificed mortals within it's bounds.

Letting the Beastman lead the way, Lord Kharver had brought some of his own Bloodbound warriors and called in a favour with the Chaos Dwarves of Zar-Zargoza, gaining the power of a warband of the short but vicious warriors.

As they came within sight of the henge, Kharver realised that they were not alone, a ghostly hue hung in the air and several ghostly horsemen flitted away over the rocky hill.

"Form line" he ordered and the command Hornblower blasted out the dirge, redirecting the army into a battleline.

*****

Lady Arnolka whipped her skull visaged head around as the Black Horse scouts quickly flew back over the hills.

They came to a rest in front of her as her Banshee handmaidens moved between her and the scouts incase of sudden betrayal.

She had raised this army after having a vision that a Chaos force would try to take the henge, corrupting the area and denying her access to the death magic which was rich in the surrounding hills.

With a series of gestures and their strange whispering language the Black Horse communicated that the humans were nearly upon the henge and their general force disposition.

After a moment to think, Lady Arnolka spoke in her own whisper-scream voice and called up her knights and most vicious units.

With a gesture they moved forwards through the hills to take the fight to the enemy...

*****

Hello, yesterday I had the rarest opportunity to actually play a game and field the miniatures I've painted over the years!

Also it was an opportunity to introduce one of my friends to one of my favourite gaming systems, Dragon Rampant.

As it was a learning game, we played the basic pitched battle scenario in the book and dispensed with Leader traits or Glory Quests for this time, in order for him to get a grasp on the rules engine and we'll build up from there when next we play.

The "Gory Bloodbath on the Plains of Doom" is a typical "line 'em up and fight" scenario as I called it, and as the name suggests, the ruleset doesn't take things too seriously.
Our table was a little under three feet wide, so we deployed four inches on instead of the six inches as listed in the book. I think the table size was roughly four feet by three feet, so worked well and we chose to play a twenty-four point warband against each other.

The attacking forces of Lord Kharver:
From Left to Right;
'Kharver's Riders' a unit of Heavy Cavalry of three Chaos Knights, this unit contains the army leader.
'The Black Axe Tribe' a unit of Light Foot of twelve Beastman with mixed weapons, meaning they could shoot and fight equally well.
'The Jackals' a unit of Heavy Foot of six Blood Warriors with Offensive, meaning they fight equally well at defence and attack.
'The Darklings" a unit of Heavy Foot of six Chaos Dwarves at the front of the army. With Offensive and Mystical Armour (they negate wounds on a roll of a six).

The defending forces of Lady Arnolka the Everghast:
From Left to Right:
'The Black Horse' a unit of light cavalry of six Glaivewraith Stalkers.
'Klaus' Reapers' a unit of Bellicose Foot of six Grimghast Reapers with Shunt Armour and Fear.
'The Everghast Uhlans' a unit of Heavy Cavalry of three Spectral Knights.
'Lady Arnolka and Handmaiden's ' a unit of scouts of three Myrmorn Banshees.
'Mistress Kareol and the Hinzergard, a second unit of Bellicose Foot of six Bladewraith Harridans who cause Fear.

The game began with Lord Kharver having the first turn and managing to get successful orders for everything to move forwards as far as possible:

In Lady Arnolka's first turn, the Black Horse' successfully tested to 'Skirmish' and moved forwards and opened fire at the Black Axe Tribe, cutting down five of the Beastman who stood firm passing their courage test:

The Everghast Uhlans swept forwards onto the rocky hill and the rest of the Nighthaunt forces held position:

Lord Kharvers' forces reformed a ragged line in the next turn, but in the Nighthaunt turn, the Everghast Uhlans pulled a bait and switch, luring the Chaos Dwarves towards them.
Before marching off and charging the Beastman.
In the resulting combat, the Beastman were wiped out and the Undead Knights had several of their number discorporated. The unit leader then failed his courage test and melted back into the floor (he ended up on a minus on his test, automatic rout):

The end of turn three after combats had started to happen.
Lady Arnolka had tested to Skirmish, and she and her Handmaiden's moved forward and pulverised one of the Chaos Dwarves from the Darklings with their Banshee Wails (shooting attack).
Lord Kharver had charged (and been counter charged) by Mistress Kareol and the Hinzergard. A bloody combat saw two of the Harridans disappear and a Knight cut down causing the Lord to flee.

A different angle of the above:

The next turn saw the Lord Kharver rally and the two Heavy Foot units charging each closest Bellicose Foot unit, both of which successfully tested to counter-charge:

The Darklings lost the combat against Klaus' Reapers in the background. In the foreground however The Jackals and the Hinzergard caused an equal number of wounds to each other, forcing the Blood warriors to retreat three inches away, as they were the attackers who instigated the fight:

When initiative swung to the Nighthaunt next, the Black Horse moved up onto the low hill so they could see something to shoot at and Arnolka pulverised and sent fleeing the Darklings who moved away needing to be rallied.
The Hinzergard also slaughtered another knight of Lord Carver's bodyguard and sent the Chaos lord fleeing towards the rear as well.
(We forgot to test for Wild Charge at the beginning of the turn so Klaus'Reapers were left with nothing to do this turn):

A closer look at the army positions:

In a very short turn for the Chaos force, both Lord Kharver and the Darklings rallied and turned to stand their ground, whilst the Jackals' marched forwards to get into combat again:

Eyeing up potential targets:

At the start of the Nighthaunt turn, Klaus' Reapers successfully tested for Wild Charge, but the Hinzergard failed and remained in place (we remembered this turn), the resulting combat unfortunately saw the Jackals' destroy the undead unit and (fortunately for me) remain out of range of the units on the hill:

Was wasn't fortunate though was that the Darklings were in range of the hill, and after being Banshee screamed at and peppered with ranged attacks were wiped from the field:

The final turn of the game which saw the table reduced to four units on the ground saw Lord Kharver rally again!
And the Jackals' charge, be counter-charged and wipe out Klaus' Reapers which also saw half their remaining numbers killed in action:

We called the game there as in the book it states that when the field is reduced to four units, you roll a D6 and on a five plus the game continues for another turn.
After a quick scan of the field however there was no-way that my reduced forces were going to take the hill as they had castled up just to do ranged attacks on anything which came near.

Looking at the victory points condition:
Lord Kharver has killed eighteen points of enemies.
Lady Arnolka had killed fourteen points of enemies.

Meaning that Lord Kharver's force "technically" won, but looking at the above he can't hold the field, so we'll call it a draw.

Once we'd gotten the game engine going in our heads, remember it's the first time my friend has ever played and I haven't for a couple of years, the game started to flow brilliantly and he'd picked up the basics.
Most of the units I used were 'reduced model units' meaning that each model represented two or more strength points, useful as we were playing on a slightly smaller table.
Less useful was remembering the convention that a strength point is basically a wound (we come from a GW background) so that was a slight sticking point for the first few turns of the game.

Dragon Rampant, along with the other members of the family (Dux Britanniarum, Lion Rampant, The Pikeman's Lament, The Men who Would be King's and the recently released Xenos Rampant) give fast, Beer and Pretzels style game which is really what we're looking for (rare are the days we can set aside a full day for a game of Apocalypse for example).

The next time we meet up, we're going to play this again, but introduce the other parts to make the most of the rules, I may even convince him to try Xenos Rampant and drag some of his many 40k armies out of storage.

*****

With a resigned sigh, Lord Kharver kicked his destrier into motion and called on his remaining warriors to return.

It had been a costly battle, not least in terms of manpower, but in the fact that he now had to make good on his debt to Zar-Zargoza and the fact that of the warband he'd been in loaned for command, non of the chaos Dwarves would return.

Beastman bodies littered the left flank and the dwarves as well as his own knights the center.
His heavy infantry unit of Jackals' had performed heroically though, smashing several of the ghostly units, all of which had discorporated when destroyed.

Upon the rocky hill, the blue-green glow of the remaining undead forces coloured the ground, wails touching the air as what he assumed was their commander issued orders.

He realised that her power would be broken as well, as the undead relied upon the ties to death magic which were stronger the more of them there were, so he'd achieved a victory of sorts he told himself.

Now to face the Lord's of Zar-Zargoza...

Until next time, have nice day...

Da Bullyboyz - Ghazkhull's Bodyguard.

Las-bolts flashed around in a storm as the oomies opened fire towards the wildly charging Ork mobs. Azog Tintoof grinned wildly as his suit of Mega-Armour built up speed and he felt the stabs of light knick the flesh of his face, one of his only unarmoured parts.

"Dey's shootin' us up Boss!" An Ork wailed in a mob nearby.

"Course day iz ya daft sod, shoot 'em back!" The unknown Nob bawled and the Orks around him lit up like a sudden revelation had struck them all.

Tintoof watched as flashes lit up the charging Orks as they opened fire with everything from Sluggaz and Shootaz to Rokkitz, and even throwing stones.
His own Kombi-Burna roared as he fired solid shells in the vague direction they were charging.
Alongside him were the other members of Da Bullyboyz and their Boss, mighty Ghazkhull Thraka himself. The ground thundered under their massive mechanical weight, Tintoof looked ahead and saw brilliant red lights darting and flashing at him as the oomies desperately tried to bring more firepower to bear.

"Fire Da Stikkbombz, keep dere' 'eads down" Ghazkhull roared, and in a ragged fashion smoke belching Stikkbombz were hurled forward into the Imperial line. Exploding amongst the oomies and slackening the firepower for that crucial second.

Like an out of control frieght train, the Meganobz hit the Imperial Guard crushing several into paste simply beneath their bulk before laying around them with crackling Power klaws. In seconds there was utter carnage and the oomies were breaking to flee the onslaught, the other Boyz laid in around the bosses, careful enough not to get within klaw range as anything that moved was a target.

Tintoof grinned as he laid about him, firing gouts of burning fuel from his Skorcha and smashing anything he could with his klaw. He stumbled as an oomie in a black coat and peaked hat hacked at him with a chainsword.
Moving faster then it would seem possible for the ramshackle collection of metal plates, Tintoof uppercut with his power klaw and separated the man's head from neck in a highly satisfactory way. He could even see the wide eyed shocked expression on the dead man's face as his head flew through the air.

And hit the Ork Nob from earlier in the great grinning gob.

"Oi, git" he started, "watch were yous throwin' stuff!".

"Or what?" Gutshredda, the self-styled boss of Da Bullyboyz shouted back.

"I'll meet ya in da fightin' pits, if yous' Ork enuff ta face me wivout all ya protection on, weedy zogger" the Nob shouted, gesticulating with his fingers at the same time.
With a snarl, Gutshredda lurched forward and snipped the upstart Nobz arm off at the shoulder.
Tintoof fired his Skorcha into the general mob driving them back.

"Too big fer ya own Gob" Gutshredda said and headbutted the wounded Nob with a sickening crunch as his armoured head met Ork cranium and the Nob collapsed into the bloody mush at their feet.

"Enough mukkin' about. Get into 'em" Ghazkhull roared and led the Waaagh on the move again.

*****

Greetings friends, it's been a little quiet after my slew of Terminator posts, mainly because I've been pulled in for extra shifts on the railway, and I've started practicing for my train driver exams which are in mid-December (as of writing this).

I'm working on finishing things which were part painted at the moment as a break from Practicing this, these Boyz are the first of these completed projects.

I didn't manage to get this mob of Meganobz finished in Orktober due to concentrating on the Dreadmob. But they follow Ghazkhull's general colour scheme, just with a little more bare metal then the big boss!

They all have a Kombi-Burna so as they can actually hit something with shooting on their way into combat, remember in 5th edition (which is my favoured edition along with Marovian) they'd get to use a flamer template so guaranteed hits on their target as Ork shooting is terribad!

Boss Urkar Gutshredda:

A proper Goff, the self-styled leader of the mob has a horned helmet as well as the horned skull motif on the bosspole. The usual 'Ard Boy Checkers scattered around the model as well as the Goff colours break up the metal hues of the Mega-Armour.

Arzog Tintoof:

I made sure to select all the bosspoles with the Goff Bull symbol, to really stuck home the idea that these guys are Ghazkhull's handpicked bodyguards. I miss the days of 3rd edition where you could mix Meganobz, Nobz, Dokz and Mekboyz all in the same bodyguard unit for a Warboss.

Zogbod Skullcleava:

The last bosspole with the basket of skullz was too goo not to use! I also took pains to give all three Meganobz slight variations on where the checkers were and apart from the black armour and red strip, I really tried to get the rest of their colours non-standard across the unit, really to get to that "everything is unique" aspect which the lore keeps mentioning about the Mekboyz and their creations.

Finally, the bodyguard with the big boss himself:

Not that I think Ghazkhull really needs a bodyguard, he's definitely big enough and ugly enough to look after himself.

Just a shame with the 9th edition Guard codex coming out soon that Old Bale Eye is dead in the 42nd Millennium:

We'll always have those heady days of Ghazkhull and Yarrick on Armageddon to go back and fight again.
When I eventually get together with Marovian for another game, it'll definitely be somewhere on Armageddon fighting during the 3rd War, good times.

Until next time, have nice day...
