Hobby spending - March 2022.

Continuing on with keeping track of hobby spending for the third month.

Having visited Fraser and had a trip to Element Games, I splurged a little this month and bought some Ork reinforcements ready to add to the WAAAGH! for the game in May.
I only managed to get one box of Warbikers, even though I wanted two as that's all that Element had in the store unfortunately.

As a reminder my budget is nominally £50.
Last month I was £15.95 under budget.

March spend totals:
Ork Warbikers - £25.75.
Army Painter Brush set - £14.
Pot of Warplock Bronze paint - £2.75

Total for March - £42.50.
Budget for March - £50.
Over/Under Budget - Under by £7.50.
Over/UnderYearly Budget - Under by £60.45.

So I'm still coming in well under budget so far this year. With the previews of the Horus Heresy boxed set it looks like that may be blown out of the water, but we're not at the summer yet so we'll see.

Until next time...

Quantity has a Quality all of it's own - 2022 Edition.

Last year, Duncan, Grant and Myself ran a month long Painting Challenge against each other to get as much finished as we could and came up with a scoring system to see who could amass the most points.

Well we're doing it again this year, but we've got some more victims/volunteers to keep score against.

Me, Duncan and Grant are taking part again, however asking on Facebook about it a number of other friends said they wanted to take part as well, so you'll see the scoreboard on the right hand column of the blog is a fair bit longer this year!

As a reminder the scoring system is as follows:
Infantry - 2 points.
Mounted - 4 points.
Medium vehicle (up to Dreadnaught size) - 6 points.
Large Vehicle (up to Russ) - 8 points.
Very Large Vehicle (Land Raider) - 10 points.
Super Heavy - 12 points.
Titan - 14/16/18 points.

If also Character +4 points (so infantry character is 6 points, Pask or Longstrike would be 12 points).
If also Lord of War +6 points (so infantry characters who are Lord of Wars are 12 points, a Baneblade would be 18 points, etc).

If the model was already part painted -50% of points (this is why I lowered everything points wise and made everything an even number).

This year the project starts at 00.01 Friday 1st April, runs until 23.59 Saturday 30th April (all entries must be posted on Facebook by that date/time code). That is the big group photo of everything you've finished together with a total score, just message me with it and I'll do a big round up post on the 1st of May.

For encouragement and to keep motivation, we're going to have a check in post on/around the 15th April. Just message me photos of finished units along with the score for them and I'll sort a post out and update the scoreboard accordingly.

So, get building and spraying today, for tomorrow we paint!

Until next time...

Black Legionnaires - Invaders of Cadia.

Another explosion rocked the command bunker causing a trickle of rockcrete dust to fall from the ceiling.
Zayn Von Meyer, Colonel of the Cadian Ninety-Second, hurriedly swiped it away so that it didn't obscure his data readout on the map projector in the center of the room.

He barked a series of orders about reinforcing the western flank and ordering the Twenty-Second Cadian Armoured to disengage. This sent adjutant's scurrying away to various vox-sets set against the bunker walls and the hurried issuing of curt orders to begin.

His brow creased with frown lines, thrown into crazy angles by his bionic eye implant, Von Meyer studied the pict intently. Red runes for traitor forces approaching, Green runes for friendly Imperial units defending. Distressingly there was far more red then green on his chart.

Another explosion caused more dust to fall, then a deeper thud drew his attention. It came again a rhythmic thud against the out wall of the bunker, again and again, each time seeming more insistent. More dust fell and sparks flickered from a ruptured lumen strip in the ceiling.

After a moment Von Meyer realised that all activity in the command center had ceased, orders were not being given, calls for aid or reinforcement were going unanswered.

He began to turn to reprimand the officers when the wall at the end of the access hall exploded inwards, armoured doors disintegrating from the superhuman pressure placed against them.

A booming noise, so loud it was painful in the close confines of the room sounded, accompanied by a brilliant strobing flash. Too late he realised that it was sustained bolter fire and that screams punctuated the sounds between firing explosions.

Officers and servitors came apart messily under sustained fire, vox units and pict readers sparked as they were hit. Von Meyer looked around at the ruins of his command squad and turned towards the breach in the wall.

Silhouetted against the firelight from outside was a baroque hulking monster. Ten feet tall, jagged pauldrons displaying iconography which made his head feel dizzy, above them were rows of tall spikes studded with trophies, many of them skulls loosely chained in place. As the muzzle of its massive bolter fired he caught glimpses of scorched black armour overlaid with gold trims, in the midst of it all was the blood red eye of the arch-traitor.

Von Meyer took all this in within seconds of laying his eyes on the monster. He felt the thud of a bullet impact in his shoulder and barely had time to panic before the mass reactive round exploded and blew his left arm off of his body, hurling him backwards over the map projector in the process.

The monster stalked into the bunker, followed by a second and then a third of its fellows. The metal grill of the floor distorted under their weight as they walked forwards, swinging brutal melee weapons they cut through any survivors of their assault. The first crashed through the projector hurling it against the far wall and stopped looking down at the crippled major, shock keeping the unfortunate man alive long enough to register more details.

"Does the Warmaster still want prisoners?" One asked with a deep grating voice, dirty beard spilling over it's mouth and eyes covered with an iron circlet, as he leaned over the fallen Imperial officer. Horrified the Cadian noticed faces writing across the surface of the armour as it moved.

"No, that one appears to be damaged" a second traitor growled back through the slit in his helmet. A pair of vast curved horns erupted through the black armoured plate and a skull was mounted between them glaring menacingly over the scene. A dead eyed Astartes helmet was impaled upon a trophy spike, it's one pure white wing raised majestically against the darkness.

With a dawning sense of cold dread Von Meyer watched as the first reached out a clawed powerfist and cradled his head for a moment seeming to stare deep into his soul with those iron covered eyes. Then he knew know more as the powerfist closed around his head, blood welling from between the claws.

"Bunker clear!" A third grating voice boxed in the spark filled gloom.

Some of the last miniatures I finished painting before I arranged the Apocalypse Game with Dave.

These are some more Black Legion Astartes for my Project Eye of Terror, this time eight bolter marines and three Terminator veterans to add to the legion, the last two bolter marines need finishing at some point.

Champion Ezigon and his Legionaries, I stuck to the same overall scheme as the previous close assault veterans and Helbrute, just with a couple of non-chaos bare heads thrown into the squad for some variation, one is a space wolf head and the other from the mk.iv marines I believe.

Plasma gunner, Champion Ezigon, Heavy Bolter and a Chaos Marine.

A close up of the plasma coils on the plasmagun and pistol wielded by Ezigon. I do like star trek so wanted to try the 'warp coil' effect on the plasma. I used red to tie the models together and limit the palette of colours overall.

The reminding four members of the squad I finished. Notable is the space marine helmet trophy, I chose to paint this in Dark Angels colours to really cement home the Eye of Terror campaign. Other trophies will be in Space Wolf colours as I have a plan for the future involving those.

Next we have 'The Voidsworn' Terminator Veterans led by Champion Alekan. These are the stars of the story above incase you didn't get the descriptive elements.

They are a legal unit at just three members strong, but I have a couple of other Terminators to finish for this unit, just waiting for some shoulder pads from eBay to turn up.
Of note is that none of these models have the proper Terminator helmets, I replaced them all with others culled from the bitzbox.
A Chaos Marine head, a fantasy Chaos Warrior head and a fantasy Flagellant head for the bearded one. Again the marine helmet trophy is a Dark Angel and the Tyranid skull is Hive Fleet Kraken I believe.

When I bought these miniatures second hand from Mirfield Miniatures, this is what they originally looked like:

I think the original owner was going for an Emperor's Children theme maybe?

Anyway, I'll get the last few finished after the apocalypse game as I'm now on with adding Greenskins to my WAAAGH ready to fight on Helsreach Highway.

Until next time...

The Road to the Apocalypse, Part 7.

Lord-General Rhauss Celeniar raised his eyes from the tactical occulous as his tactica advisor passed him a fresh mug of steaming recaf. He took a moment to smell the caffeinated beverage and forget the chaotic and confused fighting against the Ork hordes which had invaded Stygrad IV. It was exhausting organising a comprehensive defence across the continent he admitted, even with the aid of the large high command tactical staff aiding him he admitted to himself.

After a moment he directed his attention out through the viewing port of his tacticae-office, high above the command deck of the Leviathan transport.

Stretching away were legions of Imperial Guardsmen, the men and women who had given their lives over to defending the Emperor's Imperium. He had regiments of Cadians, Tallarns, Catachans and others scattered under his command in various warzones, the guardsmen here were forming for an attack on the Greenskin lines, a pre-emptive assault to prevent the Orks reaching the walls of the hivecity of Aster Prime.

Supporting them were the armoured columns, massed ranks of Battle tanks, the pride of the Imperial Guard, he had been voxed several times by Major-General Kendrick to be allowed to push his squadrons forwards, each time he had personally given the order to hold position.
Ancient Super-Heavy tanks had been roused to war by their crews and kicked up dust behind their heavy treads as they rolled forwards to their deployment zones to support the armoured formations.

On the tactical overview, icons blinked as units reported in as combat ready. A massed force of Elysian Drop Troops reported that they were mounting up and that their Valkyrie Transports were air worthy, as were their accompanying flights of Vulture Gunships.
The Imperial Navy squadrons registered as being in the airspace ready to attack or provide cover as needed, with three more squadrons of Thunderbolt Fighters en-route for reinforcement.

"I think we're about ready to begin the operation, what say you Cassar?" Celeniar asked as he looked towards his advisor. Pale skinned and dark haired, Cassar wore the deep maroon dress uniform of Tacticae-Command well, but the look on his face troubled the Lord-General.

When Cassar handed him a pair of magnoculars and directed him to look down the highway he understood.

A sea of Greenskin warriors greeted his magnified sight, banner poles swaying as the mobs advanced. Trophies and helmets clanged as they proclaimed the deeds of their owners in whatever barbaric language the Orks used. A vast dust cloud was kicked up by Ork armour, many of the vehicles being repurposed from other Imperial armies which had suffered defeat. Dreadnaughts, both of the large and small varieties bobbed and swayed as they marched within the horde and silhouetted at the rear was the unmistakable bulk of a Super-Heavy walker, giant guns protruding from its hull.
Even higher still, the jarring shapes of Ork fighter planes scudded through the upper atmosphere, diving and weaving as they appeared to be racing each other.

Rhauss Celeniar directed his attention to his own forces again, 'Emperor help me, I pray I have enough troops to face that'!

Greetings readers, do you have a moment to talk about one of the best versions of 40k?

Well strap in folks because here we go...
A while ago, two or more years to be exact, I made a post about the latest edition of Apocalypse. I will still admit that I was really excited by the prospects of this game and everything that came with it, especially as I've been in the hobby long enough to remember Epic 40k (GW's 6mm scale game).

The problem is that GW in their infinite wisdom seemed to drop the game as quickly as they released it, moving onto 9th edition (which sucks) and not adding data sheets to the game for the newer released miniatures which came after.

For all of it's promise, GW let the game whither away without so much as a thank you, so much so that I think I haven't even pulled the box out from the shelf, since my last game which was with Fraser in January 2020...

Oh well, onwards we march (for Macragge?), but the Apocalyptic bug is still gnawing away somewhere in my hobby soul.
Talking with Dave about his Imperial Guard army, which is fantastic btw, we reminisced about how much we spent playing 5th edition, and apart from 8th at the start for me, no other edition of 40k have we enjoyed or played as much.

Idly I suggested that we should make the effort and get together for a game with my Orks against his Guard at Warhammer World (there was discussion about Element Games, but we decided against that in the end).
As often happens, something gets said and the game gets elevated, and before we knew it we had agreed to play an Apocalypse game with the 5th edition rules and Codexes and the first edition Apocalypse rules.

My own copies of the rulebook, Ork codex, Apocalypse and expansion books.

This was a time before Super-Heavy Vehicles were a standard part of an army, they were a special thing for the biggest of games.
These were the days before a Knight was a "miniature" let alone a standard part of an army, or even an army of Super-Heavies.
Before the modern crisp, almost comic book artwork of the current codexes, where you got inspirational, moody pieces like this:

As Dave hasn't played 40k in a long time, I said that we should backdate and use the old rules.
I'm not going to make my friend go out and have to buy £100+ worth of books for a game which might only be played a handful of times a year, depending on how often we can meet up, family lives and demanding shift work in our respective careers dictates this.

Another of those atmosphere enducing images cropped from the book.

With that laid out, I figure I had better get adding to my WAAAGH! after all, I am aiming to have the full army painted to field at Warhammer World.
You may remember these Boyz from Orktober and JanuWaaaghry:

I dragged out the big box o'stuff and like many an Ork Mekaniak before, started bashing stuff together:

I started with a Battlewagon, having a Trukk ready to go in primer. That Blackstone Fortress box is filled with Deffkoptaz by the way.

Ditching the traditional turret with the Kannon, I picked up a Zzapgun mount I had bashed together many, many moons ago for a Looted Wagon. The fit was really good ontop of the cab of the Battlewagon, so it was decided to repurpose it.

There is a fair bit of other work to do on this wagon, but the start is there.
I've got a bunch of Kanz to repaint to my new level of painting (said Kanz were painted about ten years ago...). Then there are always more Stormboyz to build up, the smoke plumes are the time consumer there.
I bought some Warbikers to add to my Speed Freekz and I want to FINALLY get the Stompa built and on the field, rather then in bits collecting dust.

So, I've got a couple of posts for the followers of Dark God's from stuff I have finished recently, but then it's going to become very, VERY Green around here for a while!

Not artwork this time, but one of the double page spread of the apocalypse forces with all the classic terrain GW used to use.

Until next time...

Old Stuff Day 2022.

So one idea I have looted from Confessions of a 40k Addict is about doing "Old Stuff Day" this year.

Basically, as he puts out in his post, you link to one or two of your old posts from your blog which you are most proud of but which may have fallen into the dark crevices of the blogsphere over time. You give them a dust off and remind people what content you had written in the past.

I'm going to link to both Chris' and Dave's blogs as well as they have some great old content lying around.

So without further delay...

To start with, from the Blog which gave me this idea comes a post listing free download terrain templates - https://www.40kaddict.uk/2011/02/terrain-is-everything-standard-template.html?m=1
Because EVERYONE I know needs more terrain!

Next up from Redtoof is an article nominally about tournament prep, not army list building or such, but the gear you may want to pack and remember - https://redtoof.blogspot.com/2018/11/redtoofs-guide-to-tournament-preparation.html?m=0
I find this article useful not necessarily for tournament attendance, as I am definitely NOT a competitive player, but it falls under general advice for a day out gaming, if I go somewhere such as Warhammer World or Element Games for example. Nothing is worse then turning up for a day of gaming to find out someone has forgotten a rulebook for example.

I'm still plugging away at my budget Warmahordes projects when I can pick them up cheaply from eBay.
Luckgod has a blog mostly dedicated to Privateer Press' steampunk games now, they have posted about 40k and such in the past if you go through the blog roll.
The post I am linking to is a Trench Tutorial I found interesting and would consider building at some point in the future - http://luckgod84.blogspot.com/2016/11/making-terrain-on-budget-trenches.html?m=0
It's not often that you see terrain on Warmahordes tables, so this would be a nice project, it would also be transferable to 40k or Bolt Action if built suitably generic.

Dave's blog now and I've chosen a couple of posts, the first is a game he had with his daughter with simple rules to get the basics down - http://acardboardfortress.blogspot.com/2016/04/gaming-in-our-pyjamas.html?m=0
This post is great because it reminds me of the One Time, I have managed to get my son to play a wargame with me, like Dave though, I don't think the bug bit the youngster.

The second post from Dave is his last post about his 40k Imperial Guard army - http://acardboardfortress.blogspot.com/2015/09/imperial-guard-command-squad.html?m=0
I'm linking this as I really liked the colour scheme he chose for his army, and when we were at Warhammer World, many Many MANY years ago now, it looked awesome all laid out for battle. The other reason I link this is as a sort of preview, we are "hopefully" going to organise a casual gaming day and have ourselves a 5th edition game of my Orks Vs his Guard. We're going to use 5th edition because that's the last edition of 40k he played and has the books for, and I'm not about to insist that my friend go out and build nearly £100 worth of books for a game he hardly plays anymore!

Chris' posts now, and the first one is that kind of "right of passage" project every tabletop gamer should have a go at making, a Dice Tray - http://wastelandminiatures.blogspot.com/2014/02/quick-project-dice-rolling-tray.html?m=0
I've made two of these in the past and given one to my Son for when he's playing with dice in his bedroom, the Mrs bought me a special embossed leather tray for Test of Honour for my birthday a few years ago so my homemade one has been relegated to the back of the cupboard for now.

The second post I have chosen from Chris'blog are some of my favourite painted miniatures he has posted - http://wastelandminiatures.blogspot.com/2015/10/mythos-deep-ones.html?m=0
We both have a deep love of Lovecraft and have had conversations about the cosmic horrors, he even shared with me a series of radio plays based upon various Lovecraft stories.
I love the painted look of these Deep Ones and may bite the bullet and grab some this year...

Finally, for my own post, yes I've only chosen one of mine, I've reposted the campaign I wrote a few years back - https://sachiel-returns.blogspot.com/2017/10/my-friend-chris-plays-various.html?m=0
I am still really pleased with this post, how it flowed when I was writing it.
The second thing I like is how I chose to add the flavour text which changes depending of which side won, I think I'd been reading the Silver Tower game booklet or one of my Fighting Fantasy books and went that route, it added that extra level I thought, and isn't really something you see in many wargaming campaigns.
One thing though, I haven't actually played through this...yet...perhaps I may if I can get some small forces together?

I also want to highlight how at the start of my blog I wrote more like this, rather then the fluff and painted things posts I seem to have been churning out. Maybe I should write a few more campaign types like this?

Well that's it for "Old Stuff Day 2022" I hope you've enjoyed this look back in time on the blogsphere, regular updates should hopefully resume shortly as I have a few days off work coming up and should be able to get some hobby done and posted.

Until next time...
